Fresno County Peace Officers' Memorial Ceremony

For a number of years, the choir our children are a part of has participated in the Fresno County Peace Officer's Memorial Ceremony.  While concerts are usually joyful, giggly times, this is a somber event.  This year, for example, our children sang as the families and friends of two Reedley officers mourned and remembered their loved ones.  Officer Javier Bejar and Deputy Joel Wahlenmaier were gunned down in a shootout on February 25, 2010 in Minkler, CA.  Scores of officers in dress uniform stood at attention as the fallen officers' names were read, doves were released, and guns were fired.  Similar ceremonies are held around the country at this time of year.  The public is welcome.

I cannot help but believe that this event has had a lasting impact on the lives of my seven children.  They have, first hand, seen the humanity of officers where they might have otherwise only seen a badge.  They have witnessed the pain of wives, mothers, fathers and children who must somehow go on without them.  We have together heard words reminding us of the daily sacrifices made on our behalf by peace officers and their families.
Do you know a young person at risk?  Plan to invite them to attend with you next year.  You will not regret it.

Summer Fun

The youngest two children and I set out at the beginning of summer to find swimming lessons. Instead we found a treasure: A pocket of home school families and other believers we had never met. A pool full of wonderful coaches and lifeguards. A fellow quilter. A five-year-old girl who swims like a champion. New friends who seemed like old ones. A mother of eight who organizes birthdays and picnics for lifeguards. Boys "just my age" and girls "I can't wait to see". The cutest toddlers on the planet.
Instead of swim lessons the children joined swim team at Airways Pool. For 20 dollars apiece Josiah and Rebekah spent the whole summer working on their skills and developing lasting friendships 5 days a week. Guess where we will be next summer.

Swim Team Rookies

The youngest ones have a long way to go to catch up with older swimmers, so they started in earnest this summer with swim team membership. Both Josiah and Rebekah learned a lot. Josiah is now swimming much better. His competitive spirit helped with that. Breast stroke is his favorite. Bekah improved as well, but was mostly interested in the many new friends she met. Her best stroke is butterfly. Thanks to Kristin, their coach, for a great summer.

Life is good...

...when your afternoon snack is found growing next to the pool.

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
