Today, just before I left the house and headed off to see my students, I realized that I had reached one of those "season of life" moments. No longer could I squint a little to bring text into focus. It was no longer a matter of dim lighting. I came to the conclusion that I need my reading glasses with me at all times. My job keeps me pretty mobile. A purse is something to be left in the trunk of my car. My hands are busy signing or carrying endless cargo. I don't always have pockets. I needed a string for the glasses.
So...I opened a drawer, and found the Vuarnet sunglasses I had managed to not lose since 1977, and carefully removed the croakies from the earpieces. They were a little faded; they'd served me faithfully on the ski slopes since high school. Most importantly: They would do the job.
I suddenly felt weirdly happy...like I'd reached some sort of milestone - a rite of passage, if you will. As I looked at my reading glasses hanging there I felt as though I had earned some new level of respectability. (I had thought that finally getting some gray hair would do it for me, but that just made me grumpy.)
I am enjoying being the "older woman" (Titus 2). I don't mind taking calcium, doing my weight-bearing exercises, and borrowing other people's grandbabies while I wait and hope for some of my own. I find godly women with stunning gray hair and a meek and quiet spirit strikingly beautiful. Captivating. Careening toward 50 has a comforting appeal, and smiling at the future has taken on a whole new meaning.

Hello Friend!
It was wonderful to hear from you! My Josiah is learning the guitar and Beth Joy is learning the Violin. It is a blessing to have music in our home from our little ones isn't it? I too understand the entering of a new season... how blessed we are! Age is nothing to fear, hold off or push away. It should be a time of reflection and expectation of all that the Father is going to continue to do in our lives! Enjoy your family! I hope we will get time to chat someday soon!
With love,
Mrs. Joseph Wood
Lori, Thanks for your kind words on my blog. I guess I just have so much to say that I had to start writing to give everyone's ears a rest! I love your vision for me. :D Have a blessed Christmas!
I remember when...hehe! Although I got a blessing in the process. I wore glasses for a few years and then as I was looking in the mirror one morning I heard Father God say " I am going to heal your eyes" then Hallelujah, I went in to get my eyes checked cause I wasn't see that clear and I discovered I didn't need any. Been 3 years now and God is continuing to bless me in other areas too. Have a blessed season full of His miracles. Lovingly, rilda *U*
Wow, I don't think I'd wandered over here to your blog recently -- this was posted in November! (ah, the month I became a grandma!!) What fun to read :-) I've been feeling that "older woman thing", too (especially when they gave me a senior discount at Salvation Army. I was mortified! But then I saw it was Senior Day, and seniors got 25 percent off - and everyone else also got a discount of 15 percent. Phew! I'd only gotten 15 percent!)
